Joseph Campbell famously said, “If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living.”

We all love such inspiring statements. They encourage us to feel into what we really want to do with our time, and to take the leap into an authentic life. But . . . what if you find your bliss in doing things that aren’t valued by society as authentic work? What if you find your bliss in making art, writing poetry and singing songs, which are viewed as optional and not entirely useful activities? How is it possible to live authentically as an artist in a society that validates office work, manual labour, customer service, factory production and policymaking above artistry, healing, music, intimacy and spiritual guidance? 

It’s way cheaper and easier to buy mass-produced art from big-box stores, which many people do, rather than buying more expensive local art. Yet, paradoxically, our society also seems to value following your bliss, doing what you love and making a living at it.

Lone Peep’s collection includes a lifetime of original, handmade art, including drawings, paintings & sculptures from salvage and found objects, along with several poetry and essay chapbooks. During the opening show on Sept 7th, Lone Peep will also be performing original and cover songs chosen by the audience.

All of this art, writing and music is for sale, according to a sliding scale of relative hourly income rates of all types of workers, including sweatshop labourers, janitors, receptionists, indoor sex workers, schoolteachers, oil and gas executives, and professional hockey players. If you’d like to buy something, you can choose the price you pay based on comparing these incomes and offering what you feel is worth the value of art.
