Event Details

Join Bill Goers and facilitator Graham McDonald for a day of kinetic sculpture making. The day will include an introduction to the concepts and practices involved in this unique art form, instruction and illustration of the elements embodied in the work, and contemplation/reflection as a uniting fundamental of the process.  Together with Bill Goers, participants will make their own sculptures. We have space for six participants.

1st half of the day:

10:00-11:00am: Introduction, initial drawing exercise, sitting

11:00am-1:30pm: Painting the series of five drawings, and lunch break at your own timing.

Sketching and painting — An introduction to the concepts and process of making a kinetic sculpture

Participants will receive a primer on painting with Asian-style brushes, and practice making marks and characters, leading to the creation of a series of paintings that will be used to construct the sculptures. After this introduction, Bill will lead the group in a meditation before the painting begins. Between 11:00am and 1:30pm, participants are free to come and go as they wish (and have a break for lunch) during the painting process.

2nd half of the day:

1:30-2:30pm: Painting the reverse side of your 5 drawings

2:30-3:00pm: Sit, contemplation

Remainder of the afternoon: Cutting, glueing to completion

Cutting and construction of the sculpture

Using scissors, each of the paintings will be cut into long strips and then hung from a cord strung on the frames. The strips are spaced evenly along the cord, creating the effect that makes up the completed sculpture. Participants are free to come and go as they wish again between 3 and 5pm, although expect the cutting and gluing work to take between 1 and 2 hours.

Everything is supplied

Participants will be supplied with everything needed to complete the kinetic sculpture (paint/ink, paper and sailcloth for the canvases, wooden frames, cord for hanging, brushes, adhesives, scissors, examples of possible characters/imagery), as well as support, encouragement, friendliness and kindness. Participants are encouraged to wear paint-friendly clothes and keep an open-minded interest. Experience with painting and/or sculpture welcome but not necessary. Participants will walk away from the workshop with an original work of art!

“Bill Goers is a modest and talented painter. Subtle and profound, his paintings are informed by his practice of Buddhist meditation. That said, people of all ages and backgrounds are engaged by them. The basis of much of what is on display here is just one syllable, SA, the Sanskrit seed-syllable of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. It’s a small idea, but the notion of compassion has great breadth.”  — Robert Amos, Times Colonist
